Game Previews

Los Angeles Rams @ Seattle Seahawks

Thursday, 8:15 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Rams 20.50, Seahawks 22.00

Interesting Players

Terrance Ferguson (TE, LAR) | My Rank: TE24, Consensus Rank: TE42

Here’s the thing. The fantasy community is super excited about Colby Parkinson this week, coming off a massive two-TD game against the Lions. But Parkinson didn’t even lead Rams tight ends in routes during his big game. That honor went to Terrance Ferguson, as the second-round rookie posted a career-high 71% route participation rate.

With that said, Ferguson has just one career game with more than one reception. He’s still firmly in the TE2 wasteland, where we are just hoping he happens to fall into the end zone. But with Davante Adams listed as doubtful, there should be more TDs up for grabs than usual in LA’s offense. Ferguson is a viable option for desperate managers in deep and/or two-TE formats.

Kyren Williams (RB, LAR) | My Rank: RB15, Consensus Rank: RB20

Honestly, I don’t feel particularly great about Kyren this week. We all know that he has been losing work on the ground to Blake Corum. Combine that with the fact that the Rams rank dead last in RB target share, and a lot of Williams’ value has depended on touchdowns. As mentioned, Adams’ absence helps with that, but LA’s uncharacteristically low 20.5-point total certainly doesn’t.

With that in mind, my RB15 ranking of Kyren has more to do with the players around him than LA’s RB1 himself. The consensus projections have backs I either view as being on meaningfully worse teams (Breece Hall, Quinshon Judkins, Ashton Jeanty) or having meaningfully worse workloads (Chase Brown, Omarion Hampton) above Williams. I like Kyren more than all those guys, so he’s my RB15.

Philadelphia Eagles @ Washington Commanders

Saturday, 5:00 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Eagles 25.50, Commanders 18.50

Interesting Players

DeVonta Smith (WR, PHI) | My Rank: WR24, Consensus Rank: WR17

Smith is a very talented player capable of having a massive day, especially in this positive matchup. But he isn’t necessarily a priority in Philadelphia’s offense, with target shares of 18% and 11% over the last two weeks. All seven of the players I have above him that the consensus doesn’t are the top targets on their respective offenses. I’d rather have their volume than Smith’s potential volatility.

Green Bay Packers @ Chicago Bears

Saturday, 8:20 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Packers 22.25, Bears 23.75

Interesting Players

Colston Loveland (TE, CHI) | My Rank: TE14, Consensus Rank: TE10

With both Rome Odunze and Luther Burden III sidelined by injuries, Loveland has less competition than usual this week. But earning targets hasn’t been his problem. The thing keeping Loveland from truly breaking out as a consistent fantasy option is a lack of routes — he has never reached even a 60% route participation rate with Cole Kmet healthy.

There is a chance that Ben Johnson gives some extra routes to his tight ends with Burden and Odunze out. But in the fourth quarter of last week’s game — with both WRs out — Loveland still posted just a 60% route participation rate. He can definitely get there on that usage and isn’t a terrible play, but I can’t bring myself to rank him as a true TE1 while he’s a part-time player.

Jordan Love (QB, GB) | My Rank: QB18, Consensus Rank: QB13

Honestly, I don’t have anything hugely against Love. There are a couple of large QB tiers this week, and he is (for me) at the bottom of one featuring the high-end and mid-range QB2s. I wouldn’t bat an eye at anyone who wanted to start him over guys like Tyler Shough and Caleb Williams, even though I have them ranked above him.

But at the end of the day, Love is the QB17 in points per game, and the Packers have a relatively low total on the road in Chicago this week. That’s why he lands where he does for me.

Christian Watson (WR, GB) | My Rank: WR30, Consensus Rank: WR42

I don’t love Love this week, but I do love his WR1. Watson suffered a chest injury last week that even briefly landed him in the hospital, but he reportedly plans to play. Prior to exiting last week’s contest early, Watson had averaged 16.3 half-PPR points over his previous four games.

I’m not ranking Watson quite as high as that number deserves because I am a little skeptical of his continued target dominance with all of the team’s WRs healthy (he saw just four targets in Week 14, which was Jayden Reed’s first week back). But Watson is very capable of having a good day on one play, so he’s still a high-upside WR3 even with some volume concerns. If he does return to his elite volume, I will rank him even higher than this next week.

Buffalo Bills @ Cleveland Browns

Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Bills 25.75, Browns 15.25

Interesting Players

Harold Fannin Jr. (TE, CLE) | My Rank: TE3, Consensus Rank: TE5

I am a little worried about this matchup. The Bills have been the toughest opponent for tight ends this season, allowing fewer than three catches and just 5.7 half-PPR points per game. But Fannin is coming off a game in which he saw a whopping 14 targets (a 40% target share). He should be able to overcome the bad matchup to provide another elite fantasy day.

Los Angeles Chargers @ Dallas Cowboys

Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Chargers 24.25, Cowboys 26.25

Interesting Players

Justin Herbert (QB, LAC) | My Rank: QB8, Consensus Rank: QB3 & Dak Prescott (QB, DAL) | My Rank: QB5, Consensus Rank: QB9

Both of these quarterbacks are part of an incredibly tight group that spans from QB3 to around QB10. I’ve got Herbert lower within that group because the Chargers’ offense has been much more conservative recently, leading to a decrease in his production. And I have Dak relatively high because he has been one of the most consistent fantasy quarterbacks of the season.

But would I be at all surprised if these two players finished in the opposite order, more in line with their consensus ranks? Not at all. In fact, given I’m (currently) starting Dak over Herbert in a home league where I have picked the wrong QB essentially every week of the season, I basically expect Herbert to blow up while Prescott has a mediocre outing.

Javonte Williams (RB, DAL) | My Rank: RB9, Consensus Rank: RB12

Unlike with the two quarterbacks, I feel pretty confident in this ranking. The three players causing this discrepancy (Bucky Irving, Derrick Henry, and Chase Brown) all have legitimate threats to their usage. Javonte, meanwhile, sees essentially every touch in the Cowboys’ backfield. Given that Dallas has one of the highest totals of the week, that makes him a very solid RB1.

Oronde Gadsden (TE, LAC) | My Rank: TE15, Consensus Rank: TE9

Gadsden briefly seemed to be breaking out as a legit fantasy stud early in the season. But the rookie has averaged just 5.0 half-PPR points per game over his last six contests. Like Herbert, he has been a victim of the Chargers’ decreasing pass rates, and his 17% target share is just okay. He’s definitely capable of a big game (especially if LA is playing from behind), but I have him as a TE2 rather than a true TE1.

George Pickens (WR, DAL) | My Rank: WR13, Consensus Rank: WR8

It wasn’t long ago at all that we were debating whether George Pickens should be ranked ahead of CeeDee Lamb — perhaps that’s a sign that ranking him high is actually still the right call. But Pickens has genuinely slowed down recently, with duds in both of the last two weeks. Fair or not, we are starting to again hear rumblings of a lack of effort on the part of the former Steelers.

With that said, Pickens is still a must-start. I just have a bit more faith in other elite fantasy options who we know are the top options on their respective teams (or seeing impeccable usage as a WR2, in Jameson Williams’ case).

Ladd McConkey (WR, LAC) | My Rank: WR23, Consensus Rank: WR16

Once again, I want to rank Ladd higher. This is an incredibly favorable matchup, and he is a talented player. But — stop me if you’ve heard this one before — the Chargers’ passing offense isn’t firing on all cylinders right now. And Ladd isn’t the type of WR1 who always gets his, as seen by the fact that he had just a 7% target share last week. He’s a great backend WR2 option with a high ceiling, but competition is too stiff for him to move any higher than that.

Omarion Hampton (RB, LAC) | My Rank: RB27, Consensus Rank: RB20

I guess I’m just down on the whole Chargers offense compared to the consensus this week. However, my reasons for doubting Hampton are actually different than those for his teammates in the passing game. After all, the rookie benefits from Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman having reverted to their run-heavy roots.

Instead, my issue with Hampton is all about his role. Since returning from injury, he has found himself in a clear committee with Kimani Vidal. Last week, Hampton played just 37% of LA’s offensive snaps and saw just three more carries than his second-year counterpart. Combine that with the fact that the Cowboys’ defense has been tougher against the run since acquiring Quinnen Williams, and Hampton is an RB3, not a legit RB2.

Kansas City Chiefs @ Tennessee Titans

Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Chiefs 21.25, Titans 18.25

Interesting Players

Travis Kelce (TE, KC) | My Rank: TE4, Consensus Rank: TE7

There’s definitely a chance that, with Patrick Mahomes done for the year and the Chiefs eliminated from the playoffs, Kelce simply phones it in for the next few weeks. The 36-year-old is probably already dreaming of retirement. But with Rashee Rice sidelined, I expect him to have to wake up from that dream to catch a ton of underneath passes from Gardner Minshew this weekend.

Kareem Hunt (RB, KC) | My Rank: RB43, Consensus Rank: RB32

It got lost in the drama of the Chiefs’ dynasty ending, but Kansas City’s backfield shifted last week. Hunt saw far fewer carries than Isiah Pacheco, six to 11. Given that he has absolutely no explosive ability at this point in his career, a decrease in volume is very bad for Hunt’s fantasy outlook … as is the fact that the Chiefs will probably have a lot fewer red zone trips without Mahomes under center.

Cincinnati Bengals @ Miami Dolphins

Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Bengals 24.75, Dolphins 20.75

Interesting Players

Samaje Perine (RB, CIN) | My Rank: RB37, Consensus Rank: RB46

Perine was literally carted off during the Bengals’ loss to the Ravens last week. Not only did he eventually return to the game, he finished it with more carries than Chase Brown (14 to 13). If he gets that kind of workload this week against the Dolphins’ porous run defense, he should be able to have a relatively usable day.

Tee Higgins (WR, CIN) | My Rank: WR21, Consensus Rank: WR13

On the one hand, the last time we saw Tee Higgins he scored 24.2 fantasy points in highlight fashion. On the other hand, he’s the clear second option behind Ja’Marr Chase in this offense, which hasn’t necessarily been firing on all cylinders since Joe Burrow’s return. For the season, Higgins has averaged just an 18% target share. He has massive upside, but I can’t justify ranking him as more than a WR2.

New York Jets @ New Orleans Saints

Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Jets 18.25, Saints 24.25

Interesting Players

Audric Estime (RB, NO) | My Rank: RB45, Consensus Rank: RB30

I totally see where the consensus is coming from on this one. Someone has to carry the ball for the Saints with Alvin Kamara and Devin Neal sidelined. Whoever that someone is will likely have a pretty solid day against the awful Jets.

But I’m just not confident that that someone will be Estime. Last week, after Neal went down, Evan Hull had four carries to Estime’s three. I also wouldn’t be at all shocked to see the return of Taysom Hill seeing carries as a pseudo-RB. With everything on the line in the fantasy playoffs, Estime is a very risky option. If you’re desperate for upside, I might play him as an RB3/flex, but otherwise I’d avoid him for players in more stable (if lower ceiling) situations.

Tyler Shough (QB, NO) | My Rank: QB16, Consensus Rank: QB22

Don’t look now, but Tyler Shough is the fantasy QB8 over the last three weeks. The rookie has found a bit of a groove, and he is also adding more value with his legs of late. He should also get to play from ahead for once, and this 24.25-point total is much higher than we are used to seeing for these Saints (the Jets are BAD). He’s at the top of an admittedly very tightly packed tier of QB2 options for me.

Adonai Mitchell (WR, NYJ) | My Rank: WR34, Consensus Rank: WR43

After a down game in Week 14 with Tyrod Taylor leaving early due to injury, Mitchell bounced back last week with a solid 14.4-point outing. His usage has remained elite, with an average 26% target share since joining the Jets in Week 11. And, although he certainly didn’t light the world on fire, Brady Cook was competent enough in his first start last week. I like Mitchell’s chances at a decent day in a game where Cook will likely be throwing early and often.

Minnesota Vikings @ New York Giants

Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Vikings 24.00, Giants 21.50

Interesting Players

Aaron Jones (RB, MIN) | My Rank: RB21, Consensus Rank: RB26

They’re technically only the second-softest matchup in terms of fantasy points allowed, but the Giants have the worst run defense in the NFL. They allow 5.9 yards per carry to opposing backs, over half a yard more than any other team. Jones is back to being just the 1A to Jordan Mason’s 1B, but I still love his chances at an RB2 finish in this situation.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Carolina Panthers

Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Buccaneers 24.50, Panthers 21.50

Interesting Players

Baker Mayfield (QB, TB) | My Rank: QB14, Consensus Rank: QB7

I’ve been talking a lot about how this week’s QB pool consists of a couple of large tiers, but this isn’t actually a case of that principle in action. I have Baker just outside the large QB1 tier, but this consensus ranking lands him squarely within it. Having Mike Evans back certainly helps, but Mayfield has not been a consistent fantasy option this season. I would firmly rather have guys like Dak, Joe Burrow, Jacoby Brissett, and Jared Goff this week.

Tetairoa McMillan (WR, CAR) | My Rank: WR22, Consensus Rank: WR15

Maybe I’m reading too much into the last couple of games, but T-Mac’s usage seems to be trending in the wrong direction. The rookie averaged an elite 24% target share over the first 12 weeks of his career, but that number has been just 10% and 17% in his last two outings. Given how tight the competition is at the top of the WR rankings, that small potential red flag is enough to slide him to a backend WR2 for me.

Bucky Irving (RB, TB) | My Rank: RB13, Consensus Rank: RB10

Bucky Irving has re-cemented himself as the Buccaneers’ clear top back, but his role is sneakily a bit gross for fantasy. Rachaad White is still involved on passing downs, with an identical 37% route share to Irving’s over the last two weeks. And Sean Tucker is stealing the all-important goal-line work, having played all six of the team’s snaps (and handled four carries) inside the five-yard line over that same span. Irving is still a great play, but it’s hard to rank him as an RB1 when he’s losing work in the two most valuable parts of the game.

Jacksonville Jaguars @ Denver Broncos

Sunday, 4:05 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Jaguars 22.75, Broncos 26.25

Interesting Players

Jakobi Meyers (WR, JAC) | My Rank: WR20, Consensus Rank: WR29

There’s a reason the Jaguars just gave Meyers a big extension. He has been on fire since being traded to Jacksonville. If we remove his first week with the team, he has averaged 12.5 half-PPR points on a 24% air yards share.

It’s fair to be a little worried about the tough matchup with an elite Denver defense and reigning DPOY Patrick Surtain II. But Meyers has genuinely been producing like a WR1 over the last six weeks, so ranking him WR20 is already taking a potential decrease into account.

Brian Thomas Jr. (WR, JAC) | My Rank: WR29, Consensus Rank: WR38

I wouldn’t go as far as to say that Brian Thomas Jr. is fully back, or even that he has beaten out Meyers to be Jacksonville’s WR1. But the sophomore WR has played much better over the last two weeks. He’s seen usage too, with a 21% target share and a massive 44% air yards share.

Like with Jakobi, this matchup is a bit of a cause for concern, but I’m going to trust the usage and talent over the matchup. Liam Coen should be able to scheme at least one of his WRs open — maybe they can take turns having big plays while the other keeps Surtain distracted.

RJ Harvey (RB, DEN) | My Rank: RB12, Consensus Rank: RB16

Last week, Harvey played 68% of the Broncos’ offensive snaps and handled 19 of 22 RB carries. He only saw one target, but easily led the backfield with a 42% route participation rate. That’s genuinely elite usage for a team with one of the highest totals of the week. There’s always some risk that Sean Payton will change things up out of nowhere, but I’m going to cross my fingers and trust the rookie this week.

Atlanta Falcons @ Arizona Cardinals

Sunday, 4:05 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Falcons 26.50, Cardinals 23.50

Interesting Players

Michael Wilson (WR, ARI) | My Rank: WR16, Consensus Rank: WR11

I want to believe that the Cardinals will continue featuring Michael Wilson even with Marvin Harrison Jr. likely to return this week. But I just can’t ignore the fact that Wilson immediately dropped a dud (three catches on seven targets for 36 scoreless yards) the last time we saw MHJ on the field.

In fact, this ranking is massively generous compared to Wilson’s average performance with Harrison active. I might drop him further depending on what we hear about Arizona’s game plan for their two wideouts this week.

Marvin Harrison Jr. (WR, ARI) | My Rank: WR32, Consensus Rank: WR25

As productive as Jacoby Brissett has been, I don’t think he can support two top-30 fantasy WRs along with the monster that is Trey McBride. Harrison Jr. is the WR26 in points per game so — if we’re assuming Wilson maintains an at least partially expanded role — it makes sense to me that he should be ranked lower than that.

Michael Carter (RB, ARI) | My Rank: RB23, Consensus Rank: RB31

I don’t hate every Cardinals this week (I’m also high on Brissett himself, albeit as a member of that QB1 tier). With Zonovan Knight going down after just one snap in last week’s game, Carter took over as a workhorse in Arizona’s backfield. He handled 14 of 17 carries, played 79% of the snaps, and saw four targets on a 63% route participation rate.

There is a chance that Carter’s role decreases this week. Last week was Emari Demercado’s first game back from an ankle sprain, so he may be more involved with another week to get up to speed (and now that the team knows ahead of time that Knight will be out). But, in a matchup where the Cardinals are projected to be competitive for once, Carter can afford to lose some work and still see solid usage. I’d rather play him than the committee-back types who make up the high-end RB3 range.

Pittsburgh Steelers @ Detroit Lions

Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Steelers 23.50, Lions 30.50

Interesting Players

DK Metcalf (WR, PIT) | My Rank: WR12, Consensus Rank: WR18

On a rate basis, Metcalf’s role is elite. He has a 22% target share and a 42% air yards share in the Pittsburgh offense. The only issue is that the Steelers normally operate a slow, run-heavy offense. They likely won’t have that luxury against this explosive Lions team. If Pittsburgh wants any chance of winning this week, they’ll lean on Metcalf as their only truly dynamic downfield threat. That lands him as a WR1 for me.

Jaylen Warren (RB, PIT) | My Rank: RB29, Consensus Rank: RB21

Warren saw fewer carries than Kenneth Gainwell (13 to 12) last week. His illness leading into the game may have had something to do with it, but it’s still a step in the wrong direction. Gainwell already dominates the valuable receiving work in this backfield. Especially given that the Steelers will likely be playing from behind and the Lions are the second-worst matchup for RBs, I am scared of Warren as an RB2 option this week.

Jared Goff (QB, DET) | My Rank: QB6, Consensus Rank: QB11

If you’ve made it this far, you can probably guess that Goff is part of the big QB1 tier this week. With that said, I do feel very good about his fantasy outlook. He’s pulling the strings for an offense with a 30-point total, and he’s facing the eighth-softest defense against QBs. As long as the Lions don’t score all their TDs on the ground this week, Goff should provide a solid floor with a sneaky high ceiling.

Las Vegas Raiders @ Houston Texans

Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Raiders 12.75, Texans 26.75

Interesting Players

Dalton Schultz (TE, HOU) | My Rank: TE8, Consensus Rank: TE19

At first, I genuinely didn’t know what to make of this one. I didn’t think of myself as particularly high on Schultz this week. He’s just a standard, boring backend TE1 (although that 31% target share last week is nice).

But then I looked at the list of 11 players where I disagree with the consensus: Jake Ferguson, Hunter Henry, Tyler Warren, Colby Parkinson, Darren Waller, Colston Loveland, Oronde Gadsden, Mark Andrews, Juwan Johnson, Brenton Strange, and Theo Johnson. With a couple of exceptions, most of those guys are also standard, boring backend TE1 types. I like Schultz’s combination of environment and role more than the rest, but it’s usually not by much.

Ashton Jeanty (RB, LV) | My Rank: RB25, Consensus Rank: RB17

I’m very worried that the Raiders’ offense will utterly collapse this Sunday. This Texans defense has caused much, much better offenses to look like shells of their usual selves. Jeanty’s usage is absolutely impeccable, but we’ve seen over the last few weeks that that doesn’t always matter: He has averaged 6.7 points on a 92% rush share and a 20% target share.

New England Patriots @ Baltimore Ravens

Sunday, 8:20 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Patriots 21.75, Ravens 24.75

Interesting Players

Stefon Diggs (WR, NE) | My Rank: WR44, Consensus Rank: WR30

Over the last three weeks (since Kayshon Boutte’s return from injury), Diggs has averaged 4.1 points per game on a 57% route participation rate, a 13% target share, and a 5% air yards share. Based on those numbers, he deserves to be ranked even lower than I have him. He’s played well this year and is capable of a big game, but I certainly don’t recommend trusting him in the fantasy playoffs unless you have no other options.

Rhamondre Stevenson (RB, NE) | My Rank: RB33, Consensus Rank: RB43

Rhamondre returned to second fiddle duty last week, but his role wasn’t truly terrible. He actually saw more snaps than TreVeyon Henderson (67% to 49%) and finished with six carries and three targets. That’s not much, but standards get low real fast once we pass the legitimate clear starting running backs.

San Francisco 49ers @ Indianapolis Colts

Monday, 8:15 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: 49ers 26.25, Colts 19.75

Interesting Players

Brock Purdy (QB, SF) | My Rank: QB11, Consensus Rank: QB4

It’s fitting that this article ends with one last member of the massive QB1 tier that has haunted me throughout. Purdy is a very solid QB1 option, who is more or less a coin flip to outscore (or be outscored by) anyone else ranked between QB3 and QB12ish. I have him on the lower end of that range — there’s a chance he doesn’t have to do much against Philip Rivers and Co. — but it’s not a strong stance.

Jauan Jennings (WR, SF) | My Rank: WR15, Consensus Rank: WR26

I love Jauan Jennings, and I don’t care who knows it. Since Purdy’s return in Week 11, Jennings has averaged 12.3 half-PPR points on a 19% target share and a 30% air yards share. With Ricky Pearsall looking likely to miss this week, those last two numbers should be even higher on Monday night.
