Week 14 Fantasy Football Rankings Breakdown

Welcome to Week 14’s fantasy football preview. This article will start with my Week 14 rankings at every position. Then, for each game of the week, I will compare my rankings to the BluePrint Consensus Rankings, highlighting “interesting players” I am particularly high or low on. This will probably make more sense with an example, so let’s get right into it.

Thursday Night Football: Dallas Cowboys @ Detroit Lions

Thursday, 8:15 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Cowboys 25.75, Lions 28.75

Interesting Players

David Montgomery (RB, DET) | My Rank: RB29, Consensus Rank: RB21

Honestly, I’ve been skeptical of David Montgomery as a fantasy option for a while now. The “guy who is objectively not his team’s best running back but still gets there anyway cause this offense is just that good” profile just doesn’t do it for me.

Montgomery’s usage is also trending in the wrong direction, as he has posted RB rush shares of just 33%, 25%, and 29% in his last three games. Especially given that Dallas’ run defense has been much better since the arrival of Quinnen Williams, I’m happy to fade “Knuckles” this week in favor of backs who are actually their teams’ RB1s.

Jameson Williams (WR, DET) | My Rank: WR4, Consensus Rank: WR7 & Isaac TeSlaa (WR, DET) | My Rank: WR38, Consensus Rank: WR58

I’m grouping these two together because I am higher than consensus on both of these Detroit receivers for the same reason. That reason is that I have 100% assumed that Amon-Ra St. Brown, the Lions’ usual WR1, is out for this matchup. The consensus rankings, on the other hand, have the Sun God listed, but at far lower than what his fully healthy projection would be — this is likely because some sources are assuming he will play, while others are not, landing his consensus rank in the middle.

Of course, whether or not St. Brown, one of the best target-earners in the entire NFL, is active will have a huge impact on Detroit’s other WRs. I’m assuming he’s out, so I’m high on Jamo and TeSlaa. If he gets ruled in, these rankings will both fall.

Javonte Williams (RB, DAL) | My Rank: RB12, Consensus Rank: RB9

Javonte’s role is undeniably excellent, as he sees every touch and every snap in the Cowboys’ backfield aside from the handful of times per game that Malik Davis gives him a break. But this is a tough matchup, as the Lions allow the fewest points per game to opposing running backs. Williams is still a solid RB1, but there are other backs in better matchups that I trust slightly more.

Seattle Seahawks @ Atlanta Falcons

Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Seahawks 25.50, Falcons 19.00

Interesting Players

Darnell Mooney (WR, ATL) | My Rank: WR42, Consensus Rank: WR47

At the end of the day, with Drake London sidelined, Darnell Mooney is the Falcons’ WR1. Of course, he has been the Falcons’ WR1 three times this week and only had one good performance (14.9 half-PPR points in Week 12 on just three targets).

But the Falcons can’t want to build their whole passing offense out of Kyle Pitts and checkdowns/screens to Bijan Robinson, and it’s not like their other WRs (Dylan Drummond and David Sills V) are elite playmakers. In a good matchup with the lowly Saints, I like Mooney to at least do something this week.

Pittsburgh Steelers @ Baltimore Ravens

Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Steelers 18.50, Ravens 24.50

Interesting Players

Mark Andrews (TE, BAL) | My Rank: TE11, Consensus Rank: TE8

At the end of the day, Mark Andrews’ usage simply isn’t good enough to be more than a backend TE1. In fact, compared to his usage, ranking Andrews as the TE11 is giving him the benefit of the doubt. Although they recently gave him an extension, the Ravens aren’t making Andrews a core part of their offense.

For the season, he has averaged just a 16% target share on a 63% route participation rate. The tight ends I have just above him — Brenton Strange, Harold Fannin Jr., and Juwan Johnson — all have more inspiring usage (Fannin’s year-long usage isn’t great, but he posted a 19% target share on a pristine 90% route rate last week). Andrews is always capable of scoring a TD (or two) thanks to his connection with Lamar Jackson, but if he doesn’t hit pay dirt, he’s likely to disappoint. That makes him a borderline TE1 in my eyes.

Zay Flowers (WR, BAL) | My Rank: WR13, Consensus Rank: WR18

In many ways, my take on Flowers is the reverse of my take on Andrews. His usage — a 26% target share, 30% air yards share, and 92% route rate — is pristine. His production is less impressive, mostly because he seems to be allergic to the end zone. But especially against a Steelers defense that gives up more yards to WRs than any other unit in the league, I like his chances to put up good numbers, so I’m high on him this week.

DK Metcalf (WR, PIT) | My Rank: WR29, Consensus Rank: WR24

Based on what I just said about Flowers, this ranking may be a bit hypocritical. Metcalf’s season-long numbers aren’t that different than those of his opposite number: 86% route participation, 21% targets, 37% air yards.

And honestly, this ranking isn’t really because I’m out on Metcalf. Instead, it’s because I’m excited about the players I have just above him: the Chicago duo of DJ Moore/Luther Burden III (with Rome Odunze out) and emerging Jets WR1 Adonai Mitchell. If you have Metcalf, he’s still a very solid high-end WR3/borderline WR2 type.

Cincinnati Bengals @ Buffalo Bills

Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Bengals 23.75, Bills 29.75

Interesting Players

Tee Higgins (WR, CIN) | My Rank: WR20, Consensus Rank: WR17

Like with Metcalf, I really don’t have anything bad to say about Higgins. Especially with Joe Burrow back under center, he is arguably the best WR2 in the entire NFL for fantasy purposes. But he’s still a WR2. With Ja’Marr Chase across from him, he’s not likely to have a 30% target share in any given game. The players just ahead of him in my ranks — Michael Wilson, Emeka Egbuka, and Christian Watson — have proven that that is in their range of outcomes in recent weeks.

Chase Brown (RB, CIN) | My Rank: RB10, Consensus Rank: RB13

On the one hand, I want to fade Chase Brown. With Samaje Perine back in Week 13, he went straight from a truly elite workload to a fairly mediocre one. He saw only one more carry than Perine, 15 to 14, and played just 59% of Cincinnati’s snaps.

However, Brown did still easily beat Perine in route rate (52% to 21%) and targets (seven to two) last week. The Bengals also face the Bills this week; Buffalo’s defense is the fourth-softest opponent for RBs, and this game has a massive total. Even if I don’t feel great about it, I’m ranking Brown above other borderline RB1s who also have volume concerns (Josh Jacobs/Kyren Williams) or are on worse offenses (Quinshon Judkins).

Gabe Davis (WR, BUF) | My Rank: WR54, Consensus Rank: WR71

Believe it or not, Gabe Davis led all Bills receivers in route participation rate last week at 63%. It was a weird, low-volume game for the Buffalo passing offense, but that still means something. Especially with Joshua Palmer doubtful for this one, Davis will likely be on the field plenty again this week. And being on the field catching passes from Josh Allen in a high-total game environment is only a good thing.

Tennessee Titans @ Cleveland Browns

Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Titans 15.00, Browns 19.00

Interesting Players

Quinshon Judkins (RB, CLE) | My Rank: RB13, Consensus Rank: RB8

On the one hand, this is an ideal spot for Quinshon Judkins. The Titans are one of the few teams in the league bad enough to make the Browns clear favorites (4.5 points). The rookie RB has also been more involved in Cleveland’s passing game of late, a trend that could increase if Dylan Sampson (calf) is out.

But at the end of the day, I just don’t trust this Browns offense. Even in a dream matchup, their team total is less than 20 points. There are running backs with good workloads on better (often much better) offenses that I would rather start this week.

Chimere Dike (WR, TEN) | My Rank: WR44, Consensus Rank: WR58

I just finished talking about how terrible the Titans are, and Dike is not immune to that. The rookie caught one of four targets for just eight yards last week. But prior to that dud, he had mostly been productive in weeks without Calvin Ridley, with 12.9 or more half-PPr points in three of four. I like him as a deep flex or streaming option if you’re in a pinch.

Indianapolis Colts @ Jacksonville Jaguars

Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Colts 24.00, Jaguars 22.50

Interesting Players

There’s actually no one player I’m particularly high or low on in this matchup compared to the Blueprint Consensus rankings. I thought maybe Brenton Strange would pop, as I’m solidly lower on him than most analysts this week. But Blueprint’s rankings are almost right with me, having him at TE9 to my TE10.

Washington Commanders @ Minnesota Vikings

Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Commanders 22.50, Vikings 21.00

Interesting Players

Justin Jefferson (WR, MIN) | My Rank: WR16, Consensus Rank: WR12

Justin Jefferson is the best receiver in the league. But J.J. McCarthy might be the worst starting quarterback in the league. In the sophomore’s six starts, Jefferson has averaged just 9.5 half-PPR points per game on a miserable 63% catchable target rate.

With so many talented receivers (with NFL-caliber quarterbacks) around the league, I can’t justify putting Jettas higher than WR16 … and even this makes me nervous. For what it’s worth, I’m also lower than consensus on both Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson, for essentially the exact same reason. I hope McCarthy proves me wrong, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

Jordan Mason (RB, MIN) | My Rank: RB42, Consensus Rank: RB28

With Aaron Jones off the injury report, I expect Mason to return to a fairly useless role for fantasy purposes this week. In the last three games where Jones was fully healthy, Mason averaged just six carries and 0.3 targets per game on a 22% snap share. That’s not just backup usage, it’s bad backup usage.

Miami Dolphins @ New York Jets

Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Dolphins 22.00, Jets 19.00

Interesting Players

Adonai Mitchell (WR, NYJ) | My Rank: WR28, Consensus Rank: WR41

I’ll be the first to admit that this ranking of Adonai Mitchell is probably irresponsibly high. But sometimes you have to believe in something, and I want to believe in AD Mitchell. The 2024 second-round pick has always had some intriguing underlying numbers, but he couldn’t stay on the field for the Colts. He hasn’t had that problem since being traded to the Jets.

And his usage numbers have trended steadily upward, peaking with a 36% target share and 60% air yards share as he had by far the best game of his career last week. It could easily all come crashing down, but it’s not like the Jets have anyone else to throw to. I’m betting on a repeat performance against a beatable Miami secondary this week.

Jaylen Waddle (WR, MIA) | My Rank: WR11, Consensus Rank: WR15

To be fair, I was thinking as I made my rankings that there is a fairly flat tier of low-end WR1/high-end WR2 types that extends arguably all the way from WR9 to WR18. But within that tier, Waddle is one of my favorite options.

He’s a genuine top talent (seventh in PFF Rceiving Grade this season) and has seen excellent usage since Tyreek Hill went down. And although Tua Tagovailoa isn’t great, I trust him more than some of the QBs of other WRs in this range (looking at you, J.J. McCarthy and Tyler Shough). If you have Waddle, fire him up with confidence, even though the last few weeks haven’t been great.

New Orleans Saints @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Saints 16.50, Buccaneers 25.00

Interesting Players

Emeka Egbuka (WR, TB) | My Rank: WR18, Consensus Rank: WR13

Like I just said, there’s a large tier of borderline WR1s this week. I chose to put Egbuka at the end of that tier, but I’m not mad about the Blueprint consensus having him near the top. At the end of the day, Egbuka’s very lackluster recent production and Chris Godwin cutting more into the rookie’s target share as he returns to a full-time role were the tiebreakers to move him down for me.

Baker Mayfield (QB, TB) | My Rank: QB12, Consensus Rank: QB5

This might actually be the most significant difference of opinion I have with the Blueprint Consensus for this week. Jayden Daniels (who was just ruled in at the time when I pulled the consensus rankings) accounts for one spot of difference, but even still a six-spot gap is massive at this point in the rankings.

And honestly, I’m not sure what I’m missing that could get Baker this high. A spot or two, I’d have no problem with. But he is having a down year, averaging just 16.9 points per game. This matchup with the Saints also isn’t great, if only because Tampa might not have to pass much. Put it all together, and Baker is clearly a backend QB1 for me this week, not a top-half option.

Juwan Johnson (TE, NO) | My Rank: TE8, Consensus Rank: TE12

This is another one of those ones where, although I technically have Johnson four spots higher than consensus, I really don’t feel that strongly about it. His role in the Saints’ high-volume offense is better than the few names I have him just above, but the Saints’ offense is also terrible. At the end of the day, he’s a backend TE1. TE12 vs. TE8 doesn’t matter much.

Denver Broncos @ Las Vegas Raiders

Sunday, 4:05 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Broncos 24.00, Raiders 16.50

Interesting Players

Courtland Sutton (WR, DEN) | My Rank: WR29, Consensus Rank: WR21

For a long time, Sutton was the only player we could count on to have a consistent role in Sean Payton’s Denver offense. But that simply hasn’t been the case this season. For a while, he seemed to have lost the WR1 role to Troy Franklin. Now, Franklin is trending down, but Pat Bryant is moving up.

As a result of this constant shifting, Sutton has averaged just an 18% target share this season — he has also been at 16% or below in each of the last four weeks. Especially in a matchup with the lowly Raiders, where Denver likely won’t have to throw much, it’s hard to be confident that he will see volume this week.

Arizona Cardinals @ Los Angeles Rams

Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Cardinals 19.50, Rams 28.00

Interesting Players

Puka Nacua (WR, LAR) | My Rank: WR1, Consensus Rank: WR4

It doesn’t really matter because all of these guys are must-start elite options. But Puka Nacua is a fantasy demigod and my WR1 overall for this week. The Blueprint Consensus has him below Jaxon Smith-Njigba, CeeDee Lamb, and George Pickens.

But JSN is susceptible to game script if the Seahawks get a big lead, and the two Cowboys WRs cannibalize each other. Nacua is essentially a lock to rack up targets in a game where the Rams should score early and often — I’ll back him against the field in this spot.

Michael Wilson (WR, ARI) | My Rank: WR20, Consensus Rank: WR34

This is a simple case of the consensus rankings at the time of writing not having adapted to the fact that Marvin Harrison Jr. (and Greg Dortch) has been ruled out for the Cardinals this week. As we saw in Weeks 11 and 12, Michael Wilson turns into Jerry Rice when MHJ is out.

I’m a little scared of the Rams’ defense, but only a little. With Jacoby Brissett under center, Arizona just keeps passing even when they’re down big. If you’ve got Wilson, plug him into your lineup and wait for those sweet garbage-time targets.

Chicago Bears @ Green Bay Packers

Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Bears 19.00, Packers 25.50

Interesting Players

Josh Jacobs (RB, GB) | My Rank: RB11, Consensus Rank: RB4

Honestly, I might fold and move Jacobs up a spot or five on Sunday morning. But the Packers’ RB1 wasn’t a bell cow when he returned from injury last week, as he played just 55% of Green Bay’s offensive snaps. His 25% route participation rate was also his lowest healthy mark of the season.

Maybe those numbers trend up now that he is healthier. Or maybe the Packers just want to get Chris Brooks and Emanuel Wilson more involved. Jacobs is still a must-start, but I just prefer some of the other RB1 options this week … although as I write this, I feel more and more certain I’m going to change my mind on this one before kickoff if he is listed without an injury designation.

Christian Watson (WR, GB) | My Rank: WR17, Consensus Rank: WR22

Unlike with Jacobs, this is a pick I feel confident about. Watson deserves his spot in the large tier of high-end WR2/low-end WR1 options. Over the last three weeks, he has averaged 14.1 half-PPR points on a 28% target share and a 44% air yards share. With Jayden Reed and Matthew Golden both trending toward being out again, he should maintain that usage for a great matchup with a Chicago defense allowing the third-most points per game to opposing WRs.

Every Chicago WR (WR, CHI)

This is another case where I simply have the advantage of adapting to Friday’s injury news as it comes out. Rome Odunze is out, so D.J. Moore, Luther Burden III, and Olamide Zaccheaus should all be full-time (or in Zaccheaus’ case, two-thirds-time) receivers for the Bears on Sunday. That has them all much higher in my rankings than they currently are in the Blueprint Consensus.

Houston Texans @ Kansas City Chiefs

Sunday, 8:20 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Texans 19.00, Chiefs 22.50

Interesting Players

Patrick Mahomes (QB, KC) | My Rank: QB8, Consensus Rank: QB3

Houston’s defense is genuinely elite. They allow the fewest points per game to opposing quarterbacks at just 12.5. And although Mahomes has looked more like his old self this season, he hasn’t been a truly matchup-proof option — last week against the Cowboys was his first QB1 finish since Week 8. There are so many great fantasy quarterback options that, even if Mahomes is still a solid play, the bad matchup is enough to push him to the back half of the QB1 ranks for me.

Philadelphia Eagles @ Los Angeles Chargers

Monday, 8:15 p.m. ET | Projected Totals: Eagles 22.00, Chargers 19.50

Interesting Players

Oronde Gadsden II (TE, LAC) | My Rank: TE13, Consensus Rank: TE6

As I’ve mentioned a couple of times, this range of backend TE1s is pretty interchangeable. But of those players, I’m lower on Gadsden than the consensus this week. The rookie has slowed down in recent weeks since his midseason breakout, and the Eagles’ defense is the third-toughest matchup for fantasy TEs. Especially with Justin Herbert banged up, I’d recommend sitting Gadsden if you have a different option in the same tier this week.

Kimani Vidal (RB, LAC) | My Rank: RB39, Consensus Rank: RB30

This one is pretty simple. Even though Jim Harbaugh is saying nice things about Kimani Vidal, I think he’s going to go back to leaning on rookie Omarion Hampton as a workhorse in the latter’s return from injury this week. There’s a chance Hampton is eased in and Vidal still sees decent usage, but that’s not something I want to be relying on in the final week of the fantasy regular season.
