DFS Building Blocks – Week 8

It’s only natural that the NFL would follow up a six-team bye week in Week 7 with none this week. Despite the return of some of our favorite stars, many DFS players will simply want to run it back with the stacks that dominated last week. The Chiefs and Ravens stood out as good options and boy did they deliver.

The Ravens dismantled the Detroit Lions in week seven, and they have an incredible matchup with the Cardinals this week. Perhaps Lamar Jackson is playing at the level that won him MVP a few years ago?

The Chiefs also rewarded people’s faith by hammering the Chargers. Everyone knows exactly where the ball is going to go in Chiefs games, but that doesn’t stop Kelce from posting ridiculous totals on a weekly basis. 179 yards and a touchdown on 12 receptions was great to see, and it could be even better this weekend with the Broncos up next in what’s looking like a snow game.

With no teams on a bye, there is plenty to get into this week. Here are our best plays of the week.

Game Overviews

Los Angeles Rams @ Dallas Cowboys

Time: 1:00 PM ET

Venue: AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas

Moneyline: Los Angeles Rams +228, Dallas Cowboys -285

Spread: Dallas Cowboys -6

Total Points: Over/Under 45.5 (Opened: 44.5)

Fresh off the bye week, the Cowboys should like their chances against a Los Angeles Rams unit that were downed by the Steelers last weekend. The Rams’ dangerous passing attack will scare most teams, and it will be a tough matchup for a Cowboys defense that has been shaky since losing cornerback Trevon Diggs for the season. Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua are great plays every week, with Kupp looking to bounce back this week.

Darrell Henderson came out on top in the running back rotation last week, but with Myles Gaskin potentially active this week and Zach Evans on hand to get involved, it’s not worth risking it with any of them. They will be cheap, but for a reason.

On the Dallas side, CeeDee Lamb and Tony Pollard are the most obvious options. Pollard has lacked the explosiveness we are used to from him, but the bye week has come at a good time and I expect big things from him moving forward. He’s shaping up to be near the top in ownership this week. A nice play to save some money could be Jake Ferguson. The Rams are the 4th worst team against tight ends and Ferguson has seen plenty of targets from Dak Prescott. He comes in at $3,600 on DraftKings which is about half the cost of Kelce, Andrews and Hockenson. He could be a nice pivot from Trey McBride who is expected to be pretty popular this week.

Minnesota Vikings @ Green Bay Packers

Time: 1:00 PM ET

Venue: Lambeau Field, Green Bay, Wisconsin

Moneyline: Minnesota Vikings -115, Green Bay Packers -105

Spread: Pick

Total Points: Over/Under 42

Who’d have thought that the Vikings would be entering this game sky-high with confidence after defeating the 49ers? Jordan Addison had his breakout game, registering 123 yards and 2 touchdowns. This could make him popular this week, but I would be happy to leave him out. Jaire Alexander could well shadow him and it would be no surprise if the veteran corner gets the better of the rookie.

Hockenson is a target sponge so he remains a good play every single week. He could work in a stack with Cousins if you felt so inclined. The running game matchup is promising but you’re guessing between Mattison and Akers at this point.

For the Packers, it has been a deeply concerning stretch of games. After starting the season well, Jordan Love has fallen off a cliff and is making some poor decisions. This makes all of his playmakers very risky. If you are desperate for some Green Bay action then I would say Doubs at $4,900 could be the best bet. He has had a good connection with Love at times and scored again last week. Watson could break free for some big plays.

I’d also leave out the Green Bay running backs. The injury for Jones seems concerning even if he plays, and I don’t like banking on Dillon to help me win. Minnesota has been brilliant against running backs, so we will look elsewhere. Minnesota DEF is even play as a cheap option this week.

Atlanta Falcons @ Tennessee Titans

Time: 1:00 PM ET

Venue: Nissan Stadium, Nashville, Tennessee

Moneyline: Atlanta Falcons -155, Tennessee Titans +130

Spread: Atlanta Falcons -2.5

Total Points: Over/Under 35.5 (Opened: 35.5)

Arthur Smith is public enemy number one after the handling of Bijan Robinsons’ headaches last week. He doesn’t care about your fantasy team, but I would like to think he cares about winning. If so, he’s got to recognize that Bijan gives him the best chance at that. I think Bijan bounces back big time this week. Expect to see him in the passing game plenty and let’s hope he finds the end zone. The Titans have been brutal against the run, except against the Colts. Bijan should be able to find some success here.

Drake London continues to remain relevant while Desmond Ridder peppers him with targets. Six catches for 54 yards last week is nothing special, but a porous Tennessee secondary could lead us to some more points this week. I think a Bijan and London stack may not be the most highly used, so getting some exposure to that could be a good option. With so many teams in play this week though, you need every player to maximize their performance. This unconventional RB + WR stack may not get you to the top this week. You may instead opt for Ridder + London or, if you’re making the bet that the Falcons put up enough points for Robinson and London to produce winning scores, then it’s likely Ridder is coming along as well.

There aren’t many good options for Tennessee. Hopkins should see a lot of AJ Terrell, and the Falcons’ run defense has been decent this year, making Derrick Henry a risky play as well. If you want to play a Titan, a lottery pick on Tyjae Spears is probably your best bet.

Atlanta DEF will be popular – and worth it – with Levis and Willis playing QB this week. Hard to argue against it. Can play them alone or stack with Bijan for some more leverage.

New Orleans Saints @ Indianapolis Colts

Time: 1:00 PM ET

Venue: Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis

Moneyline: New Orleans Saints -120, Indianapolis Colts +100

Spread: New Orleans Saints -1

Total Points: Over/Under 43.5 (Opened: 40)

The Saints haven’t been an enjoyable viewing experience this year unless you are playing Alvin Kamara in your DFS lineups. Since his return, Derek Carr is relentlessly dumping off to his shifty running back and constantly misfiring when targeting anyone downfield. As a result, Kamara remains a fantastic option with an incredibly high floor every week.

Despite the recent struggles, I am happy to slot Chris Olave in this week. He was targeted 15 times against the Jags, and it is surely just a matter of time before he and Carr click on a few of these deeper passes.

For the Colts, Taylor is very much back, taking a bell-cow role last week. His 22 touches yielded 120 yards and a touchdown, which is a workload that makes him an option every week. The matchup against the Saints isn’t great, but it might just give us a favorable ownership percentage. I’ll never put you off him.

I think Michael Pittman is another player that you can consider most weeks, but I prefer Josh Downs in this one. The Saints star cornerback Marshon Lattimore will focus on Pittman, and Downs has already proven he can have some big games. Minshew loves targeting him, so we should enjoy playing him.

New England Patriots @ Miami Dolphins

Time: 1:00 PM ET

Venue: Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, Florida

Moneyline: New England Patriots +345, Miami Dolphins -455

Spread: Miami Dolphins -9

Total Points: Over/Under 46

The Dolphins have destroyed weaker teams this year, but have now lost to the Bills and Eagles fairly comfortably. Fortunately for Miami, New England is not a good team, despite them managing to defeat Buffalo last week.

This should be another game where the Miami offense puts up points. Bill Belichick always looks to limit the opposition’s number one weapon, and with Tyreek Hill getting lots of attention, Jaylen Waddle could go big in this one. Hill was limited to just 40 yards when these two teams met in September, with Waddle having 86 yards. I back him to improve on that this week.

Raheem Mostert had a big game in the first edition of this matchup, registering 121 yards and 2 touchdowns. He’s banged up and listed as questionalbe, but feel free to slot him straight back in as he has some of the best upside of any running back in the league.

Things aren’t as clear in the Patriots’ backfield. Ezekiel Elliott has been surprising everyone by showing some burst and effectiveness, taking work away from Rhamondre Stevenson. It makes both running backs a risky play, but Stevenson’s work in the passing game does give him a higher floor. I wouldn’t bother with any other Patriots I’m afraid outside of lottery picks in the passing game as they should be playing catch up.

New York Jets @ New York Giants

Time: 1:00 PM ET

Venue: MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey

Moneyline: New York Jets -155, New York Giants +130

Spread: New York Jets -3

Total Points: Over/Under 36.5 (Opened: 36)

The battle in the Big Apple doesn’t come with a high points total, reflecting the struggling nature of the offenses. Zach Wilson is just about doing enough to keep Garrett Wilson relevant, and he could be a good play this week against a poor Giants secondary.

If there is going to be a blow-up performance in this one, it will most likely come from Jets running back Breece Hall. Hall has been eased nicely into the season, making the most of his limited opportunities, but is now ready to take on a full workload. Hall is averaging 6.5 yards per carry and should find plenty of running room against the Giants. I’ll be locking him in.

Wilson and Hall are the only players you want to consider on the Jets side of things, and it is a similar story in the Giants camp. Saquon Barkley is also looking like he is back to full health, posing a home run threat in the rushing and receiving game. This Jets defense is elite, but the running game is one spot where you can attack them. If the Giants are to have a chance, it will have to be through Barkley.

The only other player worth playing is Darren Waller. He has enjoyed a good two-game stretch, perhaps benefitting from having Tyrod Taylor at quarterback. The Jets have given up points to the tight end position this year, so he can be a relatively confident pick. He’s sporting a questionable tag and will be very low owned making him a nice pivot from Kittle and Andrews and a nice mini-stack with Hall.

A final mention is for the Jets’ defense. They will be well rested after the team’s bye week and now get to go up against a Giants offensive line that has been amongst the worst in the league. I like them for my D/ST slot this week. The Giants side also blitzes heavily and could get Wilson into trouble if you want to take a shot on them as a leverage play against Hall lineups.

Jacksonville Jaguars @ Pittsburgh Steelers

Venue: Acrisure Stadium, Pittsburgh

Moneyline: Jacksonville Jaguars -150, Pittsburgh Steelers +126

Spread: Jacksonville Jaguars -2.5

Total Points: Over/Under 42 (Opened: 40.5)

The Jags are on a four-game winning streak and Travis Etienne is a big reason why. Jacksonville is giving their star running back plenty of touches and any concerns around Tank Bigsby’s role are a distant memory. Etienne is a top running back option every week, and the matchup with the Steelers is a good one.

Aside from Etienne, the most consistent performer has been Christian Kirk, who has had over 70 yards or a touchdown in every game since week two. The Steelers are giving up the second most points to the receiver position, so he is another confident selection this week. I am also happy to recommend Calvin Ridley. Ridley has been very hit-or-miss and has had two down weeks. This is a great matchup though and I could see the Jaguars making an effort to get him rolling and he’s got two-TD upside. I like a Jags stack with Lawrence and his playmakers this week.

For the Steelers, there isn’t much that stands out. The return of Diontae Johnson takes the shine off George Pickens, although Johnson did pop up on the injury report on Thursday this week. This is definitely worth monitoring, and if he doesn’t go, Pickens becomes a good pick. But even with Johnson, Pickens is the upside play for his big-play potential if the game turns high scoring.

The Jags have been brilliant against running backs lately, so I won’t be recommending Najee Harris. I am not keen on Warren, but he could be an option as a dart-throw lottery pick. He is undoubtedly more explosive, but I am not sure his price of $4,900 is enough of a discount to justify his selection.

Can AJ Brown continue his outrageous streak? Since week three, Brown hasn’t dipped below 125 yards. He is a true alpha receiver and bagged 175 yards and two touchdowns in this fixture earlier in the year. No one can slow him down it seems, so fire him up again with confidence.

Brown’s dominance has left Smith behind a bit, but I think he could be a good play this week. People are pretty down on Smith but he is bound to blow up soon. This dire Washington secondary could be the spot for him to do it, and the negative attitude towards him will likely give us a preferable ownership percentage. Goedert and Swift also remain as rock-solid options in this good Eagles offense.

Sam Howell has been erratic this season, but I think he should be able to help McLaurin to a good game this weekend. The secondary is the unit to attack on the Eagles and the game script should lead to McLaurin getting lots of targets.

Howell having to drop back is also good news for the Eagles’ defense. Howell is on track to smash the record for most sacks in a season, and this Eagles defensive line is nasty. They could easily be the top defense this week and make sense for leverage in a week where people will be wanting to pay down at DEF.

CJ Stroud is enjoying a fantastic rookie season, and it will be interesting to see if the bye week has helped him take another step forward. Nico Collins should smash in this game, and with Robert Woods out with an injury, it is also a fantastic spot for Tank Dell.

The matchup is great for the Texans running backs, but it is very tricky to figure out who will get the most work. Pierce got all of the work in week five before Singletary stole it all in week six. It’s a guessing game as to who comes out on top in this one, so both players are a high-risk, high-reward lottery pick. I would lean towards Pierce.

For the Panthers, your best bet will be to stick to the trusty Adam Thielen. Miles Sanders has been injured and ineffective this year, and his return only makes it harder to play Chuba Hubbard. Thielen is the only receiver who can separate consistently and will continue to be peppered by his rookie quarterback. Keep trusting him moving forward.

On the topic of injured and ineffective, how about Deshaun Watson? It has been a poor year for the quarterback who has disappointed when on the field. The Browns have managed to win a couple of games with PJ Walker under center, and this is an intriguing matchup.

Walker has been keeping Cooper relevant, but I don’t like Cooper’s matchup with Seahawks’ sensational rookie Deven Witherspoon. Jerome Ford’s injury last week means that there isn’t a running back I am excited about playing, so it looks like we will be pretty light on the Browns side this week.

It is also a tough matchup for the Seahawks’ receivers, with the Browns’ defense giving up the fewest points to the position. Nevertheless, I could see the Seahawks forcing the ball to Metcalf to get him going a bit. It was promising to see Jaxon Smith-Njigba emerge last week. He is definitely getting more involved since the bye and could be a good, cheap flex option.

Kenneth Walker also has a tough matchup and hasn’t been practicing all week. I am happy to give him a miss.

Venue: Empower Field at Mile High, Denver

Moneyline: Kansas City Chiefs -350, Denver Broncos +275

The Chiefs and Broncos face off for the second time in three weeks, this time taking place in Denver. It came as a massive surprise to see the Chiefs only muster up 19 points against arguably the worst defense in the league, so it will be interesting to see what Kansas City offense turns up this week.

Patrick Mahomes and company got back on track last week, putting up 31 points against the Chargers, which I think is the more likely outcome this week. Mahomes and Kelce remain the most solid stack in fantasy sports, and I won’t be putting you off them here. It’s looking like a snow game which favors the offense.

Rashee Rice is also joining in the fun a bit more now. He is emerging as the best of the wide receivers and a good secondary option behind Kelce. Stacking the Chiefs will be a popular move this week, and for good reason.

On the Broncos side of things, all the options are very high risk. Javonte Williams looked good last week, but he is still splitting time in that backfield, and I expect the Broncos will have to rely on the pass a lot more this week. That could benefit Courtland Sutton who has caught a touchdown in every game but two this year. Still, his targets remain low and the upside isn’t particularly appealing. The best play for when the Broncos are on offense may well be the Chiefs’ defense.

Baltimore Ravens @ Arizona Cardinals

Venue: State Farm Stadium, Glendale, Arizona

Moneyline: Baltimore Ravens -420, Arizona Cardinals +320

Spread: Baltimore Ravens -8.5

Total Points: Over/Under 44 (Opened: 43)

Baltimore’s demolition of Detroit last week will have concerned many of the AFC contenders. Lamar Jackson is playing at an elite level and is getting some brilliant support from his playmakers. It spells danger for the rest of the league and a matchup against the Cardinals could be a bloodbath.

The Cardinals’ defense are bottom six to both the wide receiver and running back positions, so Jackson, Gus Edwards and Zay Flowers are great picks this week. Mark Andrews also continues to get it done and can complete a dangerous Ravens stack.

For Arizona, there aren’t many confident recommendations. Marquise Brown had been getting by on volume, but a decline in Joshua Dobbs’ play has led to two down weeks for him. The Ravens are a very good defense so he isn’t an appealing option for me.

The one intriguing player is the tight-end Trey McBride. McBride has underwhelmed in his career so far, but he saw his biggest workload in week six, and veteran tight end Zach Ertz has just been placed on IR. It is difficult to get points out of the tight end position, but the volume should be there for McBride this week. At $2,800 on DraftKings, he could be a sneaky good play but he’ll popular and he’ll need to put up a lot of points to keep pace with winning lineups this week.

Moneyline: Cincinnati Bengals +148, San Francisco 49ers -175

Spread: San Francisco 49ers -3.5

Total Points: Over/Under 43.5 (Opened: 43.5)

A midweek addition to the concussion protocol for Brock Purdy is not good news for a 49ers team that is reeling after two surprise losses. They now have to face a Bengals team that has started to re-find their feet and will have benefited greatly from the bye week.

Sam Darnold is a more than capable backup, but his presence does make Brandon Aiyuk harder to trust this week. I still believe in his talent though, and expect him to see a lot of volume. Darnold’s price is right though and opens up a lot of options for your lineup.

Christian McCaffrey is quarterback-proof and could see even more work if the 49ers try to hide Sam Darnold a bit. He is on an insane streak of 16 consecutive games with a touchdown and remains a candidate for the RB1 spot every single week. Kittle could also have a bigger role to play, so he could be a good option after having a few down weeks.

For the Bengals, the 49ers defense is not the daunting opposition that we are accustomed to. I like both Jamar Chase and Tee Higgins this week, particularly Higgins at much lower ownership. Charvarius Ward is the 49ers’ best cornerback, and he was burnt by the rookie Addison last week. I think the bye week came at the perfect time for the Bengals and they should come out hot this week.

Running back Joe Mixon has been fairly underwhelming. He hasn’t yet had the big game we are looking for, but the opportunities are there for him. At $5,800 on DraftKings, I don’t mind having a punt on him if you are feeling good about the Bengals coming out of the bye.

The Lineup Build

It’s hard to get away from the Ravens when looking for the most appealing stack this week. They will be highly owned after what they did to the Lions, but it seems almost inevitable that they do a similar job on the woeful Cardinals’ defense. The Cardinals may not put up enough of a fight though.

The Chiefs are also a stand-out option. Kelce is unstoppable and, after faltering against the Broncos two weeks ago, I think the Chiefs smash them this week.

Scores should be high this week with so many games in play. We’ve had a couple weeks where a single game stack has won a lot of money, but this week should be a week where a more balanced approach with high-scoring players from across several games is best.

FD

Locking in Breece Hall. The first decision is whether to stack with Waller or use the mini-stack of Higgins + Kittle. I’ll play around with both options. You need to nail every position this week, so it’s not optimal to play both Kittle and Waller but it’s more feasible on DK if you want to go with that route. On FD, should stick to a three-RB build.

I’m going chalky at RB with Hall, Pacheco, and Pollard but you could swap out and add Edwards or even Mattison. Or Bijan.

I’m on Atlanta DEF now but am playing with the Vikings and also seeing how I can pay up for the Eagles or Ravens.

And, to afford all those chalk RBs, I’ll be taking a shot on Pickett + Pickens + Ridley. It’s scary, but you have to be different to win.

DK

Going equally scary on DK, starting with Darnold. He’s just so cheap. I’ll get different by paying up for CMC. And I’ll fade McBride at TE and go with Waller, adding Breece Hall. I’ll add Bijan + Atlanta DEF. Then I’ll play around with a mini-stack to fill out my WRs but am okay with two individual WRs if the fit is nice.

Update: Purdy looks like he may start now, so I’ll have to drop down from a high-end play above to make room for a different QB.

Yahoo

The Ravens players are all bargains on Yahoo, making that the obvious home for our Baltimore stack. In comes Lamar, Edwards, Flowers and Andrews to stock out the core of the team. It might be a bit risky to go with them all, but they got it done against Detroit and it is clear that these are the playmakers that the Ravens hone in on. If the other games underwhelm and a game-stack takes it this week, this could be the one.

Tony Pollard is also a bargain on Yahoo, so he slots in alongside Edwards. The wide receiver room is completed with Waddle and Ridley, both for $20,000. The Eagles are the choice on defense and that leaves plenty to spare to bring Breece Hall into our flex. Lot of star power for cheap here.
