DFS Building Blocks – Week 3

SUNDAY UPDATE:

Berrios, Mims, and Taysom Hill stand out as great values on DK. Berrios + Mims is a mini stack, can also be added to Tua + Hill or to a Mostert lineup.

The lineups I’m liking the most are starting with Fields + Kmet on FD. It’s not for the faint of heart as they could tank quickly, but even in games that have left Fields a laughing stock (again) he’s put up 15 and 16 points. That’s still around 2x his value this week. We want 3x his value, at least, and that extra could come from 50 more rushing yards, or 1 more rushing TD, or 1 more passing TD. It’s not a big stretch and we know he has the capability of being the player of the week when he puts it all together. I’m still leaning to adding a ministack of Williams/Allen + Addison. I don’t want to fade that game altogether, but if Fields puts up tourney winning numbers he could easily be the top QB of the day, while two WRs from the other game are also near the top of the leaderboard.

With Pacheco banged up, but possibly still playing, is this week we get a McKinnon game at near zero ownership? If Fields crushes, the Chiefs will be putting up points as well, so McKinnon could be more involved this week.

We’re already decently differentiated from the field by starting with Herbert instead of Cousins and by fading Kelly. Paying up for Allen instead of Williams also provides some leverage. You can always do a complete game overstack as well – QB + RB + WR to opposing WR or QB + WR + WR/TE + opposing RB and WR.

—————————————————–

Well, week 2 made us some money on DK with our Herbert stack. But it also threw us another set of curveballs. The Cincinnati Bengals are still a mess offensively and Joe Burrow is now considered questionable having tweaked his calf late in the game against the Ravens.

Tee Higgins got back on track but the offense as a whole was underwhelming, and Ja’Marr Chase put up pedestrian numbers for the second week in a row.

This is a good example of how we can leverage chalk players. We locked in Tyreek Hill in week 1 even though he was 30% owned. Last week, even though Chase was similarly popular, we played him hoping to land on one of his monster games. When players are so popular we have to choose whether to roll with the crowd or not. If we choose not to, it’s a great idea to think about what would happen if that player underperforms. If chase underperforms, perhaps it’s because Higgins had a great day instead. Consider that when thinking about how popular a player is supposed to be – if the other scenario is equally likely, but much less popular, you gain a huge advantage over the field. Now, generally we know Chase is expected to outperform Higgins, so it’s not exactly equally likely, but you get the idea. Part of what made the Herbert stacks so good last week was we were fading the popular Josh Kelly pick. If Kelly fails, as we expected, it’s likely the Chargers passing game is succeeding. We got extra leverage over the field and made money as a result.

Trevor Lawrence and the Jags offense struggled amidst poor play calling from rookie coordinator Press Taylor, leaving T Law visibly frustrated in the post-game press conference.

On the flipside, Kirk Cousins was at the very top for the second week running and is now ranked QB1 in fantasy, and Daniel Jones played a monumental second half against Arizona after sputtering early in the game. The Lions stack was fruitful with Goff playing well once again and Sam LaPorta proving to be the value we thought he was going into the week, and we’ll now be looking to replicate that value as we head for Week 3.

It’s another 12-game slate this week with a double header on Monday Night for the second week running, so let’s break down the games and put together our best plays for the week.

Game Overviews

Indianapolis Colts @ Baltimore Ravens

Time: 1:00 EST

Venue: M&T Bank Stadium – Baltimore, Maryland

Moneyline: Indianapolis Colts +310, Baltimore Ravens -400

Spread: Indianapolis Colts +8.5 (-115), Baltimore Ravens -8.5 (-105)

Total Points: Over/Under 44.5

Anthony Richardson is officially out having been forced out of last Sunday’s game with a concussion. That was wildly unfortunate for our DFS lineups as he was on pace to finish the week as QB1, having rushed for two touchdowns early against the Texans.

Gardner Minshew came in and played well, going 19/23 for 171 yards and a touchdown, but I’d rather avoid the Colts pass game against this Ravens defense. It just doesn’t feel like a good matchup for them.

On the flipside, Lamar and the Ravens offense looked a lot better against the Bengals. It still wasn’t perfect, but the return of Mark Andrews certainly helped. We were right about the reduced targets for Zay Flowers, but he remained a playmaker, and Odell’s status is now up in the air for the coming week. Zay could be the beneficiary this week after watching Tank Dell and Nico Collins catch and run all over the Colts last week.

On the ground, Zach Moss has emerged as the clear front runner in the Colts ground game, taking every designed run for a Colts RB in week 2, and picking up where he left off last year. I’ll tread lightly against the Ravens defensive front. This game is going to be a gritty battle in the trenches. Moss is also projecting to be the most popular RB on FD, making him an even easier fade for us. And if Moss fails this week what’s the most likely reason? Baltimore DEF perhaps? That may be the high leverage play we’re looking for.

Monday Night Football between the Browns and the Steelers turned out to be painful to watch, with both teams’ defenses propping them up. Deshaun Watson is struggling and the offense has very little chemistry. Amari Cooper is about the only viable play right now in their passing game.

Of course the devastating loss of Nick Chubb is going to be tough on the franchise, and on the young man himself as he faces a long road to recovery. Jerome Ford will assume the starting role in his absence, and could be a valuable fantasy play, but I’m fading him this week against a tough Titans run defense.

On the Titans side, Deandre Hopkins went into the week having been less than 100% and therefore saw reduced production, while Treylon Burks broke one off for a long touchdown.

Derrick Henry’s touches were up, particularly in the second half, and while Tyjae Spears swallowed a high percentage of snaps in the game, he didn’t see enough involvement in the run game to be playable as a lottery pick. With some questionable chalk at the top of the RB list, players like Henry at less than 2% ownership can be tournament winners. Do we expect him to destroy and underrated Browns defense? No. But is he capable of it? Yes. And if he did, would we win a ton of money? Yes.

That said, the total for the game is expected to be low, so playing very little here. Although Watson may be in play here as you need to pass against the Titans.

It was a much better performance from Drake London in Week 2, but I still don’t trust Desmond Ridder enough to find him consistently. Kyle Pitts is projected to be low owned. He’s unplayable in cash games, but I actually like him in a mini-stack with Gibbs here.

Somehow, both running backs are playable options for the Falcons, and Bijan Robinson looked superb against Green Bay. 124 yards on 19 carries plus four receptions for another 48 yards through the air. He was every bit as advertised in the draft, and the Falcons are loving their run game.

Detroit had a good game offensively, and for the second week in a row Josh Reynolds was a great play. Sam LaPorta was one of the best picks we made last week, and while his price is up, I still like him this week.

Amon-Ra tweaked his ankle against Green Bay, and while he returned he was very quiet later in the game. Jahmyr Gibbs is expected to start at running back with David Montgomery going down, so that’s going to be one to watch against this Falcons defense.

I’ll play Gibbs this week on FD, and perhaps on DK, but at $6600 there, he feels expensive while still largely unproven. That said, the upside is outstanding.

Michael Thomas is one of the fastest rising pieces in fantasy this week, proving that he is still a very viable option for the Saints. He’s picked up 12 receptions in two weeks so far, and between Olave, Shaheed and Thomas, Carr has some great options.

Derek Carr had a very average day against the Panthers defense, throwing a looping interception into triple coverage for his one turnover, but the upside of the Saints offense is present, and when you consider Chris Olave is $7000 on DraftKings, and Michael Thomas is just $5300, I love the value.

That said, Rashid Shaheed is $4200, and maybe the best value play I’ve found in Week 3 so far. He had four receptions for 63 yards in Week 2, to add to his five for 89 and a touchdown in the season opener.

On the Packers side, Jordan Love looked good, but the offense struggled more in their second outing, and I think a lot of that was the absence of Aaron Jones.

The Packers RB is currently listed as questionable, and A.J. Dillon proved without him that he’s a very underwhelming starter. I don’t love the matchup for Green Bay against this Saints defense, especially if Aaron Jones is out again.

With the potential injury to Jamaal Williams, Taysom Hill could be a game changer this week. Can also take a shot on Miller.

C.J. Stroud put himself on the map in Week 2 by leading the entire NFL in passing yards. He threw for 384 passing yards and two touchdowns, and Nico Collins went off for 146 of those yards and a touchdown.

Both Robert Woods and Tank Dell were relevant plays, adding 6 and 7 receptions respectively for 70+ yards a piece.

On the Jags side, I hated what I was watching. The playcalling is a mess, and everyone but Christian Kirk (we were on his bounceback last week) was a bust in DFS lineups. Calvin Ridley caught two balls and the redzone set up was dreadful, which doesn’t fill me with confidence going into Week 3.

The play here is the run game. I think the Jags go back to basics and bring Tank Bigsby back into the fold, giving 30+ carries to Etienne and Bigsby against a defense that leaks rushing yards. Etienne will be popular but he’s a solid pay up option to pivot away from some of the cheaper chalk at RB.

Dameon Pierce is not a play right now with the nightmare on the Texans offensive line. They played one starter in Week 2, and Pierce was getting destroyed in the backfield all game long. For a runner who doesn’t catch many passes, he’s a firm sit this week. When the line gets healthier we might have a nice value opportunity.

Jags DEF is also in play after a respectable performance against the Chiefs last week. They make a nice stack with Etienne to lower the effective ownership of the pair.

Denver Broncos @ Miami Dolphins

I might be inclined to play the Dolphins offense heavily in Week 3, facing a Denver Broncos defense that just allowed 299 passing yards against Sam Howell and another 87 rushing and two touchdowns to Brian Robinson on the ground.

Jaylen Waddle is in concussion protocol, but might clear before the game. If he doesn’t, Braxton Berrios in a stack is the move. He’s the clear third option for Miami and has been an important target for Tua both on third down and in the red zone.

On the Broncos side, Marvin Mims went crazy on two huge plays in Week 2, and while it could be a huge trap to play him this week, he’s a great lottery option for a very low price.

Russell Wilson is actually a top three fantasy quarterback right now, but that Broncos offense is still a mess, and I’ll be avoiding on the road against Vic Fangio, who will desperately want to win this one against his former team.

Mostert is a great option, and Tua and Tyreek Hill are a stack I’ll be playing too.

For the Broncos, Javonte Williams is working his way back into a heavy workload, and slowly making Samaje Perine irrelevant in the process.

This is a favorable game for DFS this week and it will be popular. Both defenses have been sloppy, and both offenses have good value pieces to build lineups around.

The Chargers have been feeding Keenan Allen, marking a huge day in Week 2 with eight receptions for 111 yards and two touchdowns. Mike Williams had eight catches too, picking up 83 yards of his own, and against a notoriously bad pass defense in Minnesota, this could be a big week for a Herbert stack. We told you early on that Allen and Williams were swapping roles some. Where Allen used to be a consistent cash game player and Williams the tournament option, now they’re both viable in tournaments. I expected Williams to be forgotten this week after Allen’s big game, but it seems he’s the more popular option of the two. Still playable though.

Joshua Kelley was a bust in Week 2, failing to take advantage of an increased workload, and on the opposite sideline Alex Mattison is equally unplayable outslide of lottery picks taking the narrative of them forcing it to him and he also knowing he has to perform now with the pressure of Akers looming.

Kirk Cousins continues to be an excellent fantasy football quarterback, and TJ Hockenson has so far proven exactly why he got paid in the off-season. Both those will be near the top of ownership, making me favor the Herbert side.

Now, back to our Chase vs Higgins discussion. Guess who the highest owned WR should be this week? That’s right, Justin Jefferson. Enter Jordan Addision. We were on him week 1 and we’ll be on him again at around 5% ownership this week. Herbert + Williams + Addison is a great starting stack, but you can really attack this game in a bunch of different ways if you prefer.

Lots to like about this one in a game with a high scoring line.

This is predicted to be the lowest scoring game of the weekend, and with good reason.

Credit to Mac Jones for the way he’s played through the first two weeks. While he hasn’t been immaculate, he’s done a pretty good job considering the talent he has at his disposal. Kendrick Bourne looks to be the most plausible option for DFS lineups, but not this weekend against the Jets, who are ticked off with their performance against the Dallas Cowboys last weekend.

On the Jets side, the only play here on the offense is Garrett Wilson if you trust him to break a couple for big yardage. Breece Hall’s carries were bizarre, but you could play him if you believe he bounces back. I just don’t love it right now, but I might put him in one lineup, expecting him to be rostered at a fairly low percentage.

The Buffalo Bills fixed their run defense in Week 2 and somehow held Josh Jacobs to a grand total of -2 rushing yards in a 38-10 beat down.

The Raiders were poor, but the Bills defense really tightened up, and could give Sam Howell a lot of trouble this weekend.

Howell did throw for 299 yards last week, but I’m not playing him this week against Buffalo. Jahan Dotson has been heavily involved too but in far too many short yardage situations and not in field-stretching scenarios, which makes him a questionable play.

Brian Robinson has been superb, and is performing as one of the best backs in fantasy football right now. He had 146 rushing yards through two games, had two touchdowns and picked up 42 receiving yards on two catches to add further points to a strong day.

I think he’s going to get ignored this weekend for the most part considering Buffalo’s defensive performance against the Raiders, so I’m going to play him this week as a potential sleeper at really low ownership.

Monday Night Football was disastrous for the Carolina Panthers, who have little to no offense right now, and nothing for Bryce Young to aim at. Andy Dalton getting the start which should be a one-week upgrade, but having watched them play the Saints, not a single receiver on the offense can get open consistently, and New Orleans was able to blanket the entire group of receivers all night, resulting in a very difficult day.

Seattle have made it clear that they’re not going to force targets to Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and Tyler Lockett is still as reliable as he’s ever been. Kenneth Walker had two touchdowns on the ground but averaged just 2.5 yards per carry. The touchdowns made it a good week for him overall, but I haven’t seen anything that’s making me want to trust him in my lineups going forward.

Geno is a great play this week again, only this week I think I’ll play him with Lockett. D.K. was banged up, and while he came back into the game, Tyler Lockett was the man against the Lions.

The Seahawks have allowed two strong days against tight ends so far with Tyler Higbee in Week 1 and Sam LaPorta in Week 2, so Hayden Hurst might be a potential lottery pick play this week.

This could be a rough day for the Cardinals, but I must give them their credit for surprising us so far this season. It’s not all complete doom and gloom, however they have allowed two games to slide through their fingers so far, which is always a mark of a struggling team.

This week it’s the Cowboys, and with the way Dallas has played defensively this season, the Cardinals could struggle to do much offensively at all, even with Diggs lost to an ACL.

My number one stack this week is Dak and Ceedee, with a sprinkling of Tony Pollard. Arizona isn’t as bad as I thought they might be, but they allowed Daniel Jones to put up close to 300 yards in a single half of football on Sunday.

Ceedee Lamb was electric against the New York Jets, so I’m leaning into this one heavily this week. And do we have still a rule of automatically play TE against the Cardinals? Ferguson may be picking up steam in his role.

Chicago Bears @ Kansas City Chiefs

Time: 4:25 EST

Venue: Arrowhead Stadium – Kansas City, Missouri

Moneyline: Chicago Bears +550, Kansas City Chiefs -834

Spread: Chicago Bears +12.5 (-110), Kansas City Chiefs -12.5 (-110)

Total Points: Over/Under 47.5

The line here at 47.5 points is a pretty big one considering not many of those points are expected to go to the Chicago Bears.

Justin Fields is the talk of the town this week following a worrying performance in which he was missing wide open receivers, pulling the ball down, and throwing interceptions on his own goal line via failed screen passes.

I don’t believe it’s all Justin Fields’ fault in Chicago. The play calling is dreadful. Shaq Barrett picked off the screen because they ran the exact same play on the play before. That can’t happen in the NFL. Chicago is a mess and just best to avoid.

This week I love Rashee Rice, Skyy Moore, and Toney as lottery picks in the Chiefs offense, who could put up a ton of yards at home in what might be a major breakout game for the offense, which has been a little slow out of the gates by their own standards this season. The problem is deciding which one to pick, in what feels like throwing darts at a board right now. Moore is likely the most vertical option in their offense, so he’s out in front right now. This is also the reason Mahomes gets the old Brady treatment as one of the rare QBs who can be played without stacking a WR.

Kelce is back, but clearly not 100%, and had less yards than Noah Gray last week. It’s too early to be putting him in your lineups right now.

I’ve started my builds this week with either Herbert or Mahomes and… Fields. Don’t get cute with Fields, but if they throw the towel in on trying to make him a pocket passer, he could turn in one of those tourney-winning performances we saw several times last year. Or he won’t. Enter Chiefs DEF. And maybe Pacheco.

The Lineup Build

The stacks this week are based around Dak and Ceedee Lamb, Justin Herbert and Keenan Allen, and Mahomes and a mix of his receiving options.

I’ll be leaning more towards Herbert and Allen against Minnesota, as well as putting heavy stock into the Dak Prescott stack with the potential for a lot of volume on offense against Arizona.

Then there’s Tua and Tyreek Hill, who were kept relatively quiet as a combination against the Patriots, but I don’t expect to see the same in the Dolphins home opener against Denver. That could be a very productive day for the duo, so we’ll be looking into that one too.

FD

I’ll be starting with Herbert + Williams + Addison, but if you want to build around fading that game (also good idea for a secondary lineup), Dak Prescott is the cheapest of the above quarterbacks on FanDuel, and CeeDee Lamb is only $100 more expensive than Keenan Allen, and cheaper than both Tyreek Hill and Justin Jefferson.

Without any exposure to the Dolphins I can then slot Raheem Mostert into this one. Or go with Etienne. I like Etienne and Gibbs at RB as well. I’m locking in Zay Flowers this week.

I’ll play around with Pitts at TE. And I’m still thinking about DEF, likely between Jags, Ravens, and Chiefs.

DK

I opted for Tua and Tyreek on DraftKings, totaling $16,000, and then added Bijan Robinson at running back for a relatively expensive first three picks.

Taysom Hill at $3300 helps me balance out my spend, and I love the value with the potential for work considering the Saints limitations at running back. I like the Jets defense too at $2800, and that gives me $20,000 for four skill position players.

If I then take a shot at Skyy Moore at $4400 and Josh Reynolds at $4200, I can go for Pacheco at running back and Mike Williams at wide receiver to round out the lineup. I’ll be playing around with these last four players looking at different combinations I like.

Yahoo

I’m actually going to go for Kirk Cousins, TJ Hockenson and Jordan Addison on Yahoo, as Addison is $22 while Jefferson is the most expensive wide receiver by some margin at $43.

Bijan and Zack Moss make for a nice pricey/value duo at running back, and I can then get Skyy Moore and Keenan Allen to complete my group of wide receivers, and Deandre Hopkins for just $15 in the flex, which feels like one of the biggest bargains available on Yahoo this week.
